PSHE/RSE

(Personal, social, health education and relationships and sex education)

Intent

Our intent for our PSHE approach is that children need to feel safe and happy in order to learn and achieve their potential. Our PSHE curriculum is to embed safe practices as well as happiness, self-confidence and self-esteem. Fundamental British Values of Democracy, Rule of Law, Tolerance, Mutual Respect and Individual Liberty are explored through our approach and across all aspects of school life, including assembly time, the creative curriculum and our core values.  Our PSHE curriculum is split into 3 key concepts: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the wider World.

Our intent is:

  • To prepare our children for life in modern Britain and the wider-world.
  • For children to develop and maintain a variety of healthy relationships, within a range of social/cultural contexts
  • To identify and effectively manage different influences on health and well-being

We implement our PSHE curriculum by:

  • Using the PSHE Association scheme of learning to teach the children questioning, thinking and debate skills.
  • Linking the 3 main areas of PSHE curriculum (Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World) to our Projects, where relevant, thus making learning meaningful and teaching creative and innovative..
  • Providing a spiral programme of knowledge, skills and attribute development, centred around nurture and relationships, where prior learning is revisited, reinforced and extended in age- and stage-appropriate contexts through engaging and inspiring stimuli.
  • Retrieval practice through verbal questioning and discussion to remember what has been learnt.
  • Through our Behaviour Values: Ready, Respectful and Safe children become responsible citizens
  • Sexual health is taught as an element of health education but also within the context of healthy relationships (See Sinnington’s  RSE policy, in line with the Department for Education’s statutory guidance).

Children at Sinnington use the skills and values learnt through our PSHE curriculum in real life contexts. For example, integrating with children from our other Trust schools and beyond, and promoting our Values in our local community and the wider-world through our active participation in fundraising and community events.

The impact of our PSHE education is that children:

  • Are open, sensitive and reflective individuals who respond and manage issues in their own lives
  • Have a moral understanding of the impact of their actions on others.
  • Use their debate skills across the curriculum, demonstrating respect and sensitivity.
